You are currently visiting the farm of John. John and his brother Dave raise pigs from farrow-to-finish, which means from birth to market weight. There are several barns on John's farm that are specially designed to care for the growing pigs at each stage of their life. Today we are going to visit the farrowing barn, where the piglets are born.
John lives on the family farm with his wife and four school-age children. Farming is definitely a business and a way of life for the whole family. John grew up on his parents pig farm and started actively farming with them when he finished college. His brother, Dave, also joined the operation and now the two brothers are partners. John's parents still help out on the farm, although they're learning to be semi-retired!
John is a 4-H Swine Club leader and enjoys helping kids in the community learn about how to care for pigs. All of the kids, including his own, are actively learning to care for and show pigs through 4-H (www.4-h-canada.ca).
In 4-H Clubs, the focus is on fun, friends and learning cool new skills … like creating crafts, building a website, producing a play, building a small engine or learning all about animals including pigs!
Open to boys and girls between 8 and 21 (the age varies in each province), 4-H has been helping develop well-rounded, responsible and independent youth since 1913. Members engage in technical skill development, exciting projects and other fun Club activities.
