Twice each day, Brent takes the time to walk through his entire barn, ensuring that his birds are healthy and checking to make sure that all feed and water lines are working as they should.
Humane treatment of birds is a priority, and it's the law.
The Canadian turkey industry, in conjunction with the federal government and animal care organizations, has developed a Flock Care Program that ensures Canadian standards for the care of turkeys are among the best in the world.
Based on the Recommended Codes of Practice for the Care and Handling of Farm Animals, the Program covers aspects such as the number of birds that a barn can hold, access to food and water, managing emergency situations (i.e. power failures in the barn), comfort and shelter, handling, supervision, protection and treatment of sick or injured birds.
