Again, you can see how quickly turkeys grow and mature. It's only been 12 weeks since the day-old poults arrived at this farm, but they're now almost fully grown and ready for market.
Turkeys are typically marketed in four different categories, most commonly referred to as:
´ Broilers (6.2 kg and under)
´ Light Hens (6.2 to 8.5 kg)
´ Heavy Hens (8.5 to 10.8 kg)
´ Tom (10.8 to 13.3 kg)
´ Heavy Tom (more than 13.3 kg)
Broilers and hens (female turkeys) are used for the whole bird market. Toms are primarily used for the further processed market, although some are sold as whole birds.
When birds are ready for market they are loaded into specially lined trailers and transported to the processing plant in specially equipped trucks to ensure swift and humane transportation.ćWeather conditions are taken into consideration when transporting birds. The trucks are covered with protective tarps that can be raised or lowered by a computer inside the cab of the truck to help control the climate for the birds.ć
Care is taken during transportation so that each bird arrives at the processing plant in the best possible condition.
